And so, to quote our realtor, we are in the process of 'Polishing the Apple' and preparing our home to sell. We have done most everything with the exception of addressing the master bedroom and 2 of the 3 bathrooms. Mostly this will be a matter of painting, but the bathrooms could use some further updates with counter tops and faucets. I will chronicle this transformation in the coming months.
I had already planned on putting up wainscotting in our entry way and stairway, and decided to still go ahead as it would take our entry from boring to beautiful, for little cost and effort.
Before:

This is actually a mid-transition picture. We already painted out the hand rail and trim along the stairway (they were originally an out-dated golden oak colour). If we were to stay, we'd replace the carpet on the stairs with wood.
We had previously painted the entry Florentine Plaster by Benjamin Moore, but I found it dull and dimensionless.
We repainted the same colour as our laundry room and kitchen/family room; Nordic Grey by Benjamin Moore. While I was nervous that it may be too dark, it isn't at all thanks to the white wainscotting (Cloud White, also by Benjamin Moore). We even enlisted the help of our little ones (in Daddy's painting shirt!).After:
I love the character and charm of the picture molding wainscotting. I anticipate adding this to our new home too!

We also painted the interior of our door a shiny black. I was nervous to do this, but loved the look on other blogs and pictures I had seen. It is beautiful, and again, adds so much character to an otherwise plain room. You may notice that we still aren't quite finished painting the walls. That will be in part two: the staircase.
A close up of our faux picture molding wainscotting....such an easy process! I didn't do a tutorial for you, as there are already so many out there in blogland.

I distressed the mirror above the hall console, and added a decorative ribbon. Although I enjoy my fall tablescape, I think an urn filled with branches or foliage would look beautiful....I'm now on the hunt for the perfect urn =)
While I try to remain optimistic: a new house, a new city, an exciting adventure, this move will be the hardest one I've ever done. I keep in mind many of the bloggers out there who have left their beloved homes, only to find a new home to love and make their own.

Oh, I do so understand. Our last home was what I thought would be my forever home, then life changes. Family is far more important than any home. Your home is stunning, but the next one will be just as wonderful if not better. At least it will be filled with family and that's what really makes a home. God Bless. Hugs, Marty
Keep the faith. Blogging friends will always be there for you, and you might move somewhere and meet some of those friends face to face! best of luck to you and your family.
Your house is absolutely beautiful!!! I love all the changes... paint colours, the black door etc.
I totally "get" your difficult decision to move though. My husband worked in the oil industry for a few years. It involved a lot of time away from home for various lengths of time. It was hard on us all, but we made it work. Eventually, he took a job back home and we are all enjoying the stability. I hope that your move will bring much peace and stability to your home.
Nice job! I am getting ready to do the same thing in my entry way....hope it looks as good as yours! (Found you on Finding Fabulous!)
Your entry way is beautiful! I'm sure it will appeal to all who consider making it their home. Moving is going to be such a fun family adventure! It will be a bonding experience - I've done it several times. Kids are so flexible and do much better than we realize. Have fun and I look forward to reading about your exciting journey!
Blessings,
Teri
This is beautiful! I'd buy your house! I'm sorry you have to leave your dream home! But, it sounds like you're doing it for the perfect reason--family. I hope you can link up to my Friday link party! alittleknickknack.blogspot.com
Good luck on the move!
What a fantastic makeover. You did a wonderful job!
Stop by and collect your clues. The largest giveaway in Decor To Adore history will be revealed next Friday.
Great job, I am sure you will sell quickly. It is sad to leave a home you love, but family is more important.
Beautiful. What a difference the wainscoting makes. It gave the area the WOW factor.
I love wainscoting! You did such a good job and I just love the paint color! I feel ya on the moving sentiments. We move alot and we live in the Seattle area right now. We are moving in 2 months to Alaska. I am so sad to leave this house. Its so hard, but I keep trying to think ahead to all the blank canvases ahead of me (in more ways than one). Good luck with your move.
It looks really good~the paint color was a great choice. I'm sure you are sad to leave, I would be too.
Oh, it's beautiful! I love the overall look, and the colors. I hope you won't mind if I shamelessly copy your color choices....it's exacly what my foyer needs :-) Best of everything to you on your new (albeit unexpected) adventure. I will be back to read more later, and follow the story as it develops.
Beautful! Love your helper; what does she charge!

Just read your comments on my blog - thanks :). Sounds like we are living parallel lives... just in different order. When my husband was working "patch" he was up there too. And now we are dreaming of living where you are. Maybe we should just trade houses LOL. Actually, we aren't in the city, but we can still see the beutiful mountains from where we are at.
Anyway, enough of my silliness. I do hope that you and your family will enjoy this new chapter and all the adventures that are in store for you and yours. It will be a big change, but what a learning experience for your kids especially. It will be a whole new world to explore. So much to see and do. :)
What a gorgeous job you've done!!
Blessings!

Whenever I read about gorgeous Benjamin Moore paint colours, the red mist begins to fall because we can't get them in the UK as far as I know. Grrr.
It's a lovely colour!
I should add, I'm just popping over from It's So Very Cheri....
Beatiful! You did a great job!
Visiting from "It's so very creative" :)
that looks wonderful, so much more interesting. wish i had the space to add some character!
Andrea, Your color choices are beautiful! It is hard to move, but you're right, family is more important!
Oh how I love your wainscoting! You did a beautiful job and I love your paint colors too! Maybe one day I will get brave enough to take on a project like this one!!

The wainscoting adds so much to your foyer. I'm sure it will help your house sell quickly. It all looks beautiful. The new color is great!
Wow... the wainscoting is gorgeous... love your paint choice for the upper half too.
Someday I'd love to do this in our home. Just lovely!
Great job.
Oooh...I really love the wainscotting. I'll have to hunt up some of those tutorials out there you mentioned. Thanks for telling us the colors you used too. I always appreciate being able to see how they really look on the walls in a real person's home, not just a sample chip or fancy staged advertising photo.
It looks like 2 different homes! So warm, so rich! I love it! Great job!
The people that buy your house are going to fall in love the second they walk in the door - BEAUTIFUL! We're on our 5th house, and there have been a few that were supposed to be "forever houses" as well....but you know what? Somehow things work out and even *gasp* are better than you can imagine they would turn out.
Good luck on the sell and SURVIVING the horrible - I mean exciting - experience of living in a house that has to stay picture perfect. I still have nightmares... ;)
Andrea, your wainscotting is sooo pretty! I so need to do this in some areas of my home! Thanks for the inspiration!
