Stairway Makeover: A Work in Progress

We started our entry way project a few months ago with the installation of picture frame wainscoting. What a difference it made! This is certainly a popular project out there in blogland, and with good reason. It is an inexpensive, relatively simple project that makes such a huge impact! If you're considering taking the wainscoting plunge, just do it. You won't be sorry!
The next step in our wainscoting journey, was to continue it up the stairway. If we were to stay in this home, I'd want to change out the stair carpet to wood.

The Before: (keep in mind that we've already painted out the golden oak handrail and siderails)

Not only has the wainscoting been added, but we've changed the wall colour and painted our front door interior black.

You may notice how widely spaced our spindles are. We will be adding in more, as this is no longer to code, and it will look much nicer filled in.

I had to buy a special bit of jewelery for my stairway: this clock. Love it!!!

Ohhhh, so pretty, and only $19.99 at my fave store, Home Sense. Maybe I shouldn't be sharing that with you. I'm going to start sounding cheap =)

One more project scratched off our never ending To-Do list!

Your stairs are beautiful. It is amazing what a little molding can do to add to a space. I love that you painted the inside of your door black!

Oh Andrea, it's beautiful! I want to do this so badly. Did you do it yourselves or hire a professional? I have a suggestion that might save you some money, time, labor and mess of changing the treads to hard wood. If I were you, I would just have the stairs re-carpeted in a Sea-grass carpet. You will get the look and feel of wood, the coastal and updated yet traditional look of wood but the texture and durability of sea-grass. You vacuum it like wood or carpet, it takes spills, it does not wear out - it is amazing. NOT sisal or jute... this is Sea-grass.

Thanks for sharing your project!

It's cam across this blog, did you take the trim OFF the stairs before putting the wainscoting on?
