Jewels of the Kitchen

.....the lighting, of course!

Our current lighting isn't actually all that bad, but it matches every other fixture in the house and doesn't have much wow factor.

With Holly's help, and some inspiration from blogland, we came up with some great replacements.

I adore Jill's style at Forever*Cottage. Her dining area is no exception. What really puts this area over the top, is that amazing lantern. I saw this image and knew I had to incorporate a lantern somewhere in my space.

What did I tell you? Fabulous!

Another inspiration came from my friend Christine, of Bijou and Boheme. She added some amazing lighting in her new kitchen. It certainly kicks up the wow factor in there.

Have you ever? wowzas!!

While my lighting choices aren't quite as fabulous or glamorous as hers, I was inspired by how her choices blend perfectly with her style and take a beautiful space from beauty to WOW!!

Our goal was to find more cottage style lighting that fits with the look Holly and I are aiming for.

Here's what we've chosen:

1. Pendants over bar area:

Visual Comfort Antiqued Brass pendants. I think I'm in love. I adore these, and the finish? don't get me started!!

2. Over the island:

Hello Gorgeous! I reallllly wanted to incorporate a lantern style pendant somewhere in the dining/kitchen area. We finally settled over the island, and I think it will be perfection.

3. Dining and Kitchen tables:

Simple, yet pretty 6 arm chandelier for over the dining table, and a 3 arm for the kitchen table.

{the last 3 lights are all from Pottery Barn}

The lights should arrive in the next few weeks, and then it's installation time. I can't wait to see them, and you know I'll be sharing the new look with you all!

This and That and a Spring Mantel

The past few weeks have been busy, busy! It is all so exciting, though, and I'm loving every minute of our homes transformation! Here's a few things we've been up to:

1. Most of our old furniture has been sold to make way for the new. A few pieces have already arrived, and I can't wait for the rest to get here. I'm impatient like that......I want it now. Yesterday would be even better =)

The rooms are so empty, it's echoing in here! The kids love it and are begging to keep it this way. Afterall, there's more room for forts, toys, and zooming around on the toy car!

2. We've been having so much fun picking out fabrics, bamboo shades etc (and by we, that is Holly and I. Hubs is pretty much happy if I'm happy and doesn't care what we do).

{that sweet off white ruffled number is the slips for our new dining chairs. I'll show you them once the chairs arrive! Check fabric is drapes, bamboo shades on all the windows and some grainsack goodness for chairs in the family room}

3. One would think that the living/dining/kitchen reno would be enough to keep us busy, but no. We are in the midst of our laundry room facelift as well. I'm super motivated to get these projects done. I've been feeling a wee bit unsettled in our new home, and I really think that making these spaces complete will help us feel more at home here.

{the worse the before, the better the after, right??}

4. I did manage to do a little pretty-ing up of the mantel. It was looking a little dark, so I added some creamware to brighten it up. I am loving the new look for spring!

{here's a sneak peak of the new fireside bench-I adore it!}

5. I've been long admiring and searching for antique trophies. I found these two, and while not exactly a good deal, I had to have them anyhow.

They haven't found a home yet, but perhaps once we start accessorizing the rooms, the perfect spot will present itself.

Coming up in the next week or two:

-finalizing our kitchen design and choosing our cabinet maker.
-finalzing some design details for the family room and kitchen/dining room.
-continuing our laundry room facelift, painting, new shelving, decor etc =)

Fun, Fun!!

Kitchen: The Plan

I am most excited about finally finishing our family room. No. Wait, I'm most excited about the dining room, or is it the kitchen? Yes, the kitchen.

Be gone honey oak-ish cabinets. Be gone cabinets that are falling apart despite being only 4 years old. Be gone kitchen that just does not fit with the rest of the house.

I knew pretty much exactly the style of kitchen I wanted. I showed Holly my pinterest board, gave her a few ideas, and she worked her magic into this:

Key Features:

*The cabinets are white painted, simple shaker style. I love this style as depending on the accessories and finishing details, so many different styles of kitchens can come from this simple door style.

*The outer granite counters will remain, but the granite on the island will be replaced with a wood top.

*The island will be painted a grey, such as Benjamin Moore's Chelsea Grey , and other cabinets a white such as Benjamin Moore's White Dove.

*corbels, toe kicks, crown molding and perhaps some open shelving will add detail to the simple cabinetry.

*We already purchased a professional style range: A Viking 36" 6 burner duel fuel beauty. Oh, I can't wait to cook on this!

*White subway tiles and perhaps some beadboard for a backsplash.

*Change out the lighting. I adore the ones Holly chose.

*We are considering antiqued brass drawer pulls and knobs.

*I love the look of face-frame cabinets (where you have a hinge exposed), but you do lose cabinet space using this style. It is still being considered for the breakfast nook cabinets, and the island.

These two kitchens are my dream kitchens. I know you've seen them before!

Joan's classic white kitchen at For the Love of a House.

Alison's gorgeous renovation at The Polohouse.

Gorgeous, aren't they? I hope to emulate some of the qualities of these beautiful kitchens into our own.

We are currently waiting on a few quotes to come in, then the fun will begin! Likely in 6-12 weeks, we'll have our new kitchen!
