Cottage Dining Room: A Before and After

First of all, thank you so much for the kind comments about our Living Room! We really do love our new space! I still owe you a post on sources, and I'll do that soon! I've tried to answer all your comments, but I've run a bit behind-I'll catch up just as soon as I can!

Today, our tour continues with the nearly completed Dining Room. I decided to show you now, however, as I think it could be a while before I find the perfect pieces to complete this room. After all, the best way to have that collected over time look, is to collect it over time =)

Here is our Cottage Dining Room, thanks to some new furniture pieces, re-working of some old pieces and the talents of Holly Mathis:

The French doors go through to the sunroom, which extends behind the dining room. Our 'formal' dining room is actually more of a nook in a bay window.  We also have an informal breakfast nook near by.
I know there is a trend to more casual eating spaces, doing away with a separate dining room.

I, for one, have always loved having a separate more formal eating space. Despite the fact that this is a very open concept space, I am grateful this house has this separate dining area.

There are three things that make this room: The table, the curtains and the lighting.

First, let's talk table. It is a trestle style Farmhouse table, bought online through Black Rooster Decor. I L.O.V.E. it!! Nina at Black Rooster has some amazing pieces, and she was wonderful to work with. Definitely worth checking out her site. By the way, while she's located in Toronto, Canada, she ships all over, and does much of her business in the US.

Secondly, the lighting. It's the Armonk from Pottery Barn. We did the smaller Armonk over the Breakfast nook.

Thirdly, those custom check drapes (Which Holly's seamstress sewed and Holly mailed to me) are the crowning glory in this room. Adding drapes in a space can make such a difference!

The bamboo blinds are from Select Blinds (which are both in the US and Canada).

The buffet was an antique which you can read more about here.

The slipcovered chairs are from Ballard Designs. They are very, very comfortable, and I love that the slipcover is easily washed (tres important when you have 3 little sticky fingered munchkins).

At Holly's suggestion, I had the F monogrammed on two of the chairs. They are actually the chairs that would normally go at the ends of the table, but I didn't want to cover up the beautiful trestle detail, so instead they are put on the side of the table.

I am still looking for some transferware plates for above the watercolour painting on that wall.

I am also looking for some lighter frames for my butterfly prints. With the new look, they are just looking too 'heavy' in their dark frames and mats.

Beautiful trestle detail

Are you ready to see just how far this small room has come?

Before:

What a change! I simply love it now!

Holly is my decorating angel. Love, love, love her.

Your dining room has so much cottage style now! I think the slipcovered style chairs and drapes really warm up the room. The table is like a piece of art in its own right. I wouldn't cover up the ends with chairs either.

Hi, Andrea -
Both your living and dining rooms look gorgeous!! But still comfy and liveable. I didn't know you were working with Holly. She is so talented! I love your dining table - very cool. Looks quite substantial yet elegant. Thanks for the tour.
Cheers,

Your room is beautiful. Love the drapes. Why not just paint those frames a lighter shade till you find exactly what you want??

Simply one of best dining rooms I've seen. I looove the table and I want the drapes too. She mailed them to you? That's an idea. The slipcovers are wonderful. I really like the pleating on them. Were these from Ballard Designs? Your whole room is wonderful. Can't wait to see more! Transfer ware plates will be a nice touch too.

Hi Andrea!
You must be thrilled!
The curtains and natural woven shades add so much warmth to the bank of windows and I told you before that I am crazy for the carved trestle table.
Stunning!

I love a before and after project and yours is simply beautiful! The addition of the slipcovered chairs really adds charm and compliments the light filled room. A perfect space to spend long hours with friends and family.
